Could it be that the construction industry has been singled out is because the large amount of undocumented workers in construction? This way the Obama administration can make good its promise to give "All Americans" health care. Notice they don't say "citizens". Obama, a constitutional law expert, realizes that the constitution does not differentiate between citizens and the undocumented. They pass single payer, citizens will have the opportunity to provide and pay for more health care for non citizens. This administration wants to finish the job FDR started in dependency on the government, not the private sector.

Frank, Brian, thank you for the wonderful video today. I salute the men and women who defend my right to be a free American. To all, may the holidays bring you peace even in the mist of a storm you may be in. This year was probably one of the most difficult years of my life, but I remain optimistic, as I can only go up from here.
May everyone here re-tool, get focused, and make the best of the new year ahead. We all need each other, so lets learn from one another, help one another and rise to the next level next year.
I sincerely wish all of you here a very Merry Christmas, and a better New Year!

Living in the DC area gives me an interesting perspective on our law makers... our "local news" is the rest of the country's national news. I say we clean house (and Senate), start from scratch to put people who are more in touch with the reality of the common people. They spent Trillions and have now shot their wad to to anything else in Q1 when interest rates are going to the high end of the 6% range... then who will buy houses? Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. May 2010 be better than 2009...can't get much worse.

Interesting headline "Health Care Bill Threatens Housing". Could have read "Health care bill mandates insurance for construction workers!" or "Health Care bill makes it harder on Illegals". Call it like you see it, but it looks like a bias to me.

"My knee jerk reaction to this is that its not clearly thought out"--- LMAO. Not clearly thought out? This is government we are talking about. It represents all of us, who, have never clearly thought out the purpose & limitations of government. For the sake of argument, let me say I can only justify government functions of a Defensive Military, Police, and a Court system, all else can be (and should be) left to the market. Indeed, if we left all the rest to the market, then government would be small but efficient, and the market would finally be a "free" market filled with everyone doing everything voluntarily. Charities would abound for all sorts of needs, and an overall general equality would be maximized in the population. As MLK said, let freedom ring!

stop with the complaining, try to find some viable solutions that work for the majority and not for your individual pockets. this mess this country is in did not happen in 11 short months. 10 months ago we were on the verge of collapse, a worldwide collapse. our president has not only help reverse that but he gained the confidence of the rest of world in the process. isolism does not work in a world economy, you can't just recklessley take from the worlds economies in good times and then leave them hanging in bad times. it will take time to right this ship, Albert Einstein said it best, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them". trickle down economics does not work, tax breaks for the wealthy and big business does not work. we need clear and viable solutions that work for the majority. get rid of paid lobbist, bring on public financing for campaigns and we will get rid of the most corrupt gov't system in the world. Merry Christmas to all!

What we need is TERM LIMITS not health care!!! If you want more health care go buy it with the added tax revenue it is going to cost you don't add your burden to me through added taxes. Recently had surgery and I paid cash as I'm uninsured. The bill worked out to be 1/3 of what it would have been because I negotiated with the providers ahead of time. Those who wouldn't negotiate didn't provide services, I went and found others. Now that is called free enterprize. My surgery turned out excellent and recovery was complete. The emergency Doctor cost me triple what the Surgeon cost because I couldn't negotiate with him. The Congress is hoodwinking America as 67% don't want what they are offering. So those in the 33% side of this bill need to consider you are in the minority here. If they cut the pork on the bill, and join the ranks of the public by using the same as the ordinary Ameerican then possibly I cound stomach them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Have you guys looked at the video poll results?
What's that tell you?
We don't want this bill and we don't trust our legislators. Assuming that we represent a reasonably accurate cross section of American people, what do think will happen at election time?
why rates are up!: (December 23, 2009 8:56am)
MBS this week..so my question is who the hell will soak all these treasuries up now that Jackie Chan and Co have just turned their nose at the man child and the US. Rates to go much higher and you have heard it here first!
Why rates are up!: (December 23, 2009 8:54am)
Do you really want to know why rates have risen? it is because Obama pissed off the chinese at the climate summit and now they are selling their treasuries..he is over there committing another $100 billion dollars for this climate garbage and the Chinese as well as everyone else knows that the US is borrowing the money from the Chinese to begin with..they now own $2.3 trillion of US debt. If you notice too the Chinese came out this AM and advised that quote "The United States cannot force foreign governments to increase their holdings of Treasuries," Zhu said, according to an audio recording of his remarks. "Double the holdings? It is definitely impossible". Obama ( who has the economic brain and experience of a district manager at Mc Donalds has well and truly stuck his fat foot in his mouth on this one. I would lock up all your deals right now because this selling will not stop..i see they are auctioning another $118 billion next week..i know the feds only plan on buying $16 billion

Scary how those poll results look? It makes you wonder why are they pushing this health care bill so hard?? It seems they just want it passed and don't care about doing it RIGHT????? Probably because they know they have devauled the dollar so much that a single tylenol will cost $5000.00. Beleive it or not when my father was hospitalized in the "80s the hospital charged $200 for Tylenol. Thanks TBWS Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2010 is going to be HUGE!!

DAG-Excellent points. And how much of that money will be lost or unaccounted for in the next 3 years?
OVco: (December 23, 2009 7:17am)
I agree, the valuation bottom is not here. It's only been prolonged by the tax credit. Just like propping up the auto industry. Will be interesting to see in 2010 what happens when the government slows its purchase of mortgagebacks that have effectively beomome "0ptions" for borrowers with all the softening in servicing. If this keeps up mortgage rates will track like credit cards making inflation a long lost concern.
Cat Platt: (December 23, 2009 7:05am)
DAG, Something to build on? Apparently you heard the talking points yesterday. Hear this: the benefits won't take place until 2013. Taxes begin January 2010. Why would you agree to a plan that you pay for 3 years prior to benefits? That is just ONE of the problems. How about the government in charge of 48% of the economy if this passes? They already are in charge of 30% as of today with the auto industry, Fannie/Freddie, TARP banks, etc. I don't want the government 'building on, anymore. Scrap this POS bill and get to some real reform. If it's such a damn crisis, then why do WE THE PEOPLE pay for 3 years before benefit 1 begins?
DAG: (December 23, 2009 6:59am)
IF/WHEN we have health are reform, most of it will not take effect till 2013. In the propoosed bill there is a provision for small businesses to band together for better pricing and to receive tax credits. Insurance companies cannot deny coverage for pre existing conditions, cannot drop you if you are sick, have to cover children, choice of doctor is addressed. Just a few points. I don't know how much longer we can continue to take a 20-25% increase in premiums in a market like I'm in with only two choices of insurance, both high. This country needs health care reform, it won't be perfect, but something to build on!

Cat Platt: (December 23, 2009 5:40am)
@Who cares: well, you should care. Take a look at the demographics of the areas of the country and industries most often served by public monies. You'll probably find it's in the blue states and heavy on the restaurant, hotel, retail, etc. or the 'working poor' far more often. Those left in the construction industry are the bosses, owners, and foreman. The extraneous 'undocumented' got cut a long time ago. If you want to see a recovery in housing and construction, do you really think it's wise to penalize the participants with taxes?

Jeff Launiere: (December 23, 2009 4:36am)
Although the first-time homebuyer tax credit did boost some sales I do not at all agree that it was the main factor in the sales numbers. In my market sales up to $800,000 have spiked and if it was just people looking for a taxpayer handout these sales would not have taken place. I had several first-time buyers who got the tax credit along with those that have owned many homes but qualified as they had not owned in three years. Not one of them knew they qualified for the tax credit until I consulted with them. All these people were buying because of the prices, not the tax credit. I know others had different experiences with it but I found on questioning most of these people were going to buy anyway.
TD Hawk: (December 23, 2009 3:53am)
Know your statistics? That everything maps to bell curve? Guess where housing is in that curve? Hint: Not yet at bottom. Folks, I'm afraid we're still going to take our medicine with or without IRS hand-outs. I'm certainly not opposed to the credit but, consider the current market, half the sales are first-timers and a third are distressed. In other words, we're scraping the bottom of the bucket of people who didn't/couldn't buy during the run-up. Not to be a bah-humbug, but there's well over a million units of shadow REO inventory (see Real Trends) waiting to hit the market. We're in for a long slog, and Lawrence Yan is a buffoon of an economist if he persists in his smiley faced cheer leading. The employment scene simply doesn't portend a housing recovery for another few years, certaily not while we've got double digit unemployment.
Cat Platt: (December 23, 2009 2:50am)
I almost hate to say this. It gives me a slight sick feeling, but I have to agree with Lawrence Yan from NAR on this single issue. The closings that took place in Oct and Nov were lined up in advance and we did indeed think the tax credits were expiring at the end of November at that point. We're seeing the same flurry of activity, which is really out of character for late fall/early winter and there is no other explanation.
