If the Dems stay in we might as well leave the industry because there will be NO industry left in the USSA.

Pops and Evergreensapppraisers: You are correct. Without Clinton's acquiesence, the derivatives and Countrywide fiascos would have been much more controlled. Pops is right. As for Bush, well...I was one of the last left standing in that 24% approval rating. Then when I saw what he did during the waning days of his admin in the meltdown, I saw a totally different person. I saw through and realized some very disturbing information. Rhino....even though there was an election and the democrats could have easily passed health care with their majorities(if everyone was on board that is)...why didn't they...because their own members didn't like the health care bill so they had to resort to reconciliation.
Fryed: (April 19, 2010 2:31pm)
Rhino, I know this is complicated....you know there is an election coming? The democrats want to discredit the republicans for not having a pro consumer attitude...so if the democrats come out with a very pro-consumer, anti-banks and wall street piece of legislation(CFPA) which they know that many of their own democratic members won's support, who do you think might be against it(hint:not the democrats because the republicans are generally MORE pro business). So when the election campaign starts, guess what the democrats will say.....THE BAD REPUBLICANS WERE AGAINST THE FINANCIAL REFORM THAT THE DEMOCRATS WANTED, therefore vote democrat. AND even though the democrats hold a majority (-1 in the senate) they will will try to skewer the republicans because they were against reform. And many of the uninformed American population will say I'm not going to vote in those bad republicans because they were against reforming the banks and wall street.....got it?
Rhino: (April 19, 2010 1:44pm)

The trouble is implamenting them without completely corrupting their true intent and purpose. Its going to be a long road out of this wilderness but it still starts with a few steps in the right direction. Taxes are a sore point with me having been handled rather roughly by the IRS in the past. I would completely support a National Sales Tax or VAT coupled with the REPEAL of the 16th Ammendment.

The good news is - we're not alone - "This should be a wake-up call. Both sides are guilty," said Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. She pointed to "nonsense" that goes on during campaigns that leads to "promises made but not promises kept." Still, she added: "Distrust of government is an all-American activity. It's something we do as Americans and there's nothing wrong with it." Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican who won a long-held Democratic Senate seat in Massachusetts in January by seizing on public antagonism toward Washington, said: "It's clear Washington is broken. There's too much partisan bickering to be able to solve the problems people want us to solve." And, he added: "It's going to be reflected in the elections this fall." A better action would be putting laws in place making people in these corporations accountable for their actions when it comes to decisions that adversely affect the US or the global economy. In this point in society and a global market, I think persons in charge of corporations that have such pull and purposely set up scenarios where their company makes a profit at the ultimate cost the economy are committing treason. We should set a higher standard to those who run these enormous sized mega corporations. I'm ALL for capitalism, but it must be checked on occasionally and people need to be held accountable for their actions. Especially when they have the power to cripple the very foundation of the very thing that made them rich.

5pence: (April 19, 2010 10:20am)
evergreenappraisers - totally agree. The Federal Reserve is a private entity (they are no more part of the Federal Government than Federal Express) that was entrusted with keeping, holding and maintaining the value of our money. What's happened in less than 100 years is the dollar is worth .04 or less, America is the largest debtor nation in the world, gold and silver can not be used as currency (to maintain their absolute control of the Federal Reserve Notes worth through world wide market manipulation) and we owe them trillions in interest for what we've borrowed from them. Quite the scheme ehhh? Add in the income tax that was introduced the same year as the Federal Reserve and you have an entity of bankers that had a plan from the beginning to destroy the value of the dollar and install themselves as rulers with all the money to make the rules. In the '20's and before the great depression, thousands of local banks were destroyed by the Fed increasing and decreasing the money supply.

It was ignored and encouraged by the previous administration which, after starting wars all over the place and ignoring anything resembling regulation, "solved" the resulting financial disaster with a three page "hand money to GS et al" bill in September 2008. The 4% tipping point on the 10 year seesm to have been averted and I’m sure next weeks short term auctions will deliver lower yields. Got to keep those mortgage rates below 5%. Plenty of demand for US debt when you scare the public out of the equities markets. I think companies like Golman and AIG need some cleaning out. Their practices are the downfall of the secondary market and the complete crumbling of 3rd party confidence in the financial markets. You can sell a turd as long as you call it a turd and price it as a turd. When you put some pepper on it and call it Filet is when you run into problems. All of the blame that has been placed upon Mortgage Brokers really stems from the fact that they were packaging up turds for sale based off of the guidlines from the Lenders and then Goldman and AIG slapped a Grade A Filet sticker on it and sold it on the secondary market. That constitutes fraud to the tune of a couple of trillion dollars. As a result we now have HVCC and the new GFE and all the other fun requirments to "protect" the borrower from malicious Brokers when what stopped the machine was consumer confidence in the secondary market. The economy has to have fuel to operate and cash is gas; no cash, no gas, economy stops moving

Right on Sergei. We're not capitalist anymore as capitalism needs production & we don't produce enough to cover our expenses-we borrow. Banks and government now make money off recycled debt or they just create it out of thin air-thanks to the Fed that got rid of gold & silver as currency so that the reserve note would be all that people can use and by inflating & deflating the money supply, they can enrich themselves and bankrupt nations. How better to enrich yourself than controlling the money supply. Fed Reserve was enacted in 1913-same year for the Fed Income Tax. My guess is so the Fed could be sure the US would be liquid enough to pay for their "help". $1 is now worth .04. Anybody notice inflation at the store? Government says it's almost non-existant, another lie when a can of peas is $2. The Fed is saying inflation isn't here yet-really? Inflation is the hidden tax. In 2025 the interest owned on the debt will be more than this country produces. We are Greece on a larger scale

-5Pence-thanks for the reading suggestion. Here's another one for you: AFTERSHOCK by the Wiedemer brothers. It's especially worth the read because their precursor book written BEFORE the meltdown was like having a crystal ball. Think about this all you folks in 'Originator-Land' - every day that you're open, anyone tied to the big banking system is subsidized to operate and compete against you on a day to day operating basis - AND they'll eventually buy the paper you originate. Heads they win...Tails You lose.
Free Your Mind, Neo!

For every 1000 people that hack away at the limbs of the tree of evil, only one hacks at the root.
One of the prime drivers of this whole debacle is the very BANKING CARTEL called THE FEDERAL RESERVE. Our country went against the grain of leaders like Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson & Andrew Jackson and allowed the banking system and DEBT BASED money system to thrive. They simply serve at their own pleasure and garner the wealth of all who borrow. They're criminals operating in our midst. Every time you write a conventional or government mortgage, you support them. You are a slave to the system.

BTW, I was watching the testimony of Mr (We're doing Gods work) Blankfein in front of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission where he said that they were shorting the CDO's they were creating. I'm suprised it took this long to bring charges! But sure as hell glad the SEC is finally doing something. The big banks knew that nothing goes up forever & they were all shorting these CDO's while they were proclaiming to the masses the big lie that home prices will never go down! & they paid off the ratings agencies so that junk appeared as AAA & all doubts were erased. Total scam and we bailed them out. Ponzi scheme & we're the suckers. Fix it now or wait till the next meltdown for real reform. It won't be far off. The authors of "13 Kings", a book about the banks, said have the banks break themselves up into $100 billion thrifts, hedge funds, etc and that makes sense. Banks were never supposed to grow as big as they are. JPM worth is at $2 trillion & the rest are in the trillions. Dangerous.

REORealtor, I read the Rolling Stone article. I agree, GS is satan incarnate, but I'm also of the opinion that Obama and his administration are far too friendly with GS to ever prosecute these bastages the way they need to be. It would be nice if the midterms rolled in such a way that the newly elected would be true blue Americans and prosecute the snot out of them. If it's attempted prior, we'll never get a real trial and it will be a smoke and mirrors op. IJS

Recovery at and and all costs, including overlooking criminal activity at the biggest banks, is counter productive to growth of a sustainable system. Government should stop dragging out the pain by spending our, our kids and their kids money propping up the status quo that brought us this meltdown. We need to declare war on these financial terrorists and bring them all to justice so that a real recovery in line with the morals and spirit of the constitution and government of, by, and for the people is restored. This country is being held hostage by these financial terrorists and the ransom is all the wealth & abundance of this country. Banks control our government -it's so obvious in the consumer protection bill that's really a bank protection bill & institutes too big to fail. Banks are able to do all kinds of dirty deeds and get away with them because they're so big that any CEO can deny knowledge of impropriety. Break them up so that criminal activity can be tracked & justice meted.

oYu do not have to go to Greece to see the damage that Goldman Sachs has done. Check out what happened in Jefferson County Alabama. Except they weren't involved yet they walked away with three million dollars and never did anything! How? The profits were so huge on the bank schemes for rates swaps on the state of the art sewage system that Jefferson County was building that JP MORGAN GAVE GOLDMAN SACHS $3,000,000 JUST TO BACK OFF OF THE DEAL!!! They were also caught paying out $7,000,000 in bribes to officials in the County. Some people went to jail, JP got a slap on the wrist and a fine that was a spit in the bucket compared to their profits and the good citizens of Jefferson County got stuck with triple the water bills for perpetuity. Oh yeah, a few schools got shut down and government offices could no longer operate and a few commoners got laid off, but, hey, it's all in a day for the banksters. A good accounting is in April Rolling Stone if you need to have nightmares.

Alright, I'm flippin and I'm floppin. F & B, you're correct. It is grandstanding for the upcoming midterms. Obama and his team will never, never prosecute GS in the manner that needs to be done. Someone is taking one for the team here. It's a dog and pony show.

Big or not, wrong can't be rewarded. GS can be traced to some of the most damaging, and boldest illegal behavior and can't be allowed a pass. Sorry. Get past this 'too big to fail' mentality. GS can be traced to most bubble activity for the last 140 years. Kill the beast!!

As Mr. Wells notes below... you have to read The Big Short by Michael Lewis. Just hit the top of the best selling list. The book tells you who knew, who didn't, who profited and a whole lot more. It's a great read and really scary.
